15 Year Veteran of Rome Police Department Arrested – Accused of Drug Trafficking

A 15-year veteran of the Rome Police Department has been arrested, accused of aiding and abetting a marijuana trafficking operation. According to arrest records at the Floyd County Jail, 39-year old Ernest Edward Cox provided sensitive, law enforcement information to a man named Tyson Brown at a location on King Bee on March 8th.

Brown was arrested that same day for selling marijuana.

Cox was arrested Monday (March 13th) following a six-month investigation by the Calhoun Office of the GBI and the GBI’s West Metro Regional Drug Enforcement Office.  The Rome Police Department contacted the GBI in October of 2016 after receiving information about alleged corruption. Rome Police Chief Denise Downer-McKinney requested the GBI conduct a criminal investigation into allegations of police corruption against Officer Cox.  The Rome PD and the Floyd County District Attorney’s Office assisted the GBI in this investigation.

Cox is currently held at the Floyd County Jail without bond on one count each of trafficking marijuana, violation of oath of office, tampering with evidence, and bribery.

This investigation is active and ongoing.

Anyone with pertinent information is encouraged to contact the GBI at (706) 624-1424.
