An accident involving an 18-wheeler and a passenger car, took place at 8:00 on Monday morning – approximately 8 miles east of Centre on Highway 411.

According to Danny Smith of the Cherokee County Rescue Squad one person was fatally injured in the crash, and Alabama State Trooper reports later confirmed, that the victim was Megan Rose Douglas – age 18 of Centre.

The collision occurred at the intersection of 411 and County Road 34 – at the New Bethel Baptist Church.  One bystander, who lived nearby – said he heard the horn on the big rig followed by the impact between the truck and the car, and then the sound of the truck as it slammed into the ditch

The driver of the 2012 Volvo, 50 year old Mark Worthy of Lineville – was listed as being hurt in the crash – however no additional information regarding the extent of his injuries was available.

The area was shrouded in thick fog that morning, and that may have played a role in the accident.

Even though the truck left the roadway the driver did manage to keep it from overturning – EMA Director Beverly Daniel responded to the scene of the accident in order to determine whether any diesel fuel was leaking from the tanks.

Emergency crews remained on the scene for an extended period of time, and traffic was blocked in both directions for most of the day.

That accident remains under investigation.
