Alabama Agriculture Commissioner John McMillan Visits Cherokee County

mc 1Alabama Agriculture Commissioner John McMillan was recently in Cherokee County, and in front of a large gathering, he wasted no time in getting down to business in regard to the financial situation currently facing the state.

McMillan pointed out that Alabama – through a variety of measures – has for year after year depended upon a series of safety nets to stay above water.

At first, it was the economic stimulus package out of Washington; later on Alabama’s voters allowed more than $450 million out of the Oil & Gas Trust Fund and following that voters in the state let legislators take another $160 million plus from the Trust Fund.

And at that point McMillan reminded the crowd that we all knew there would at some point come a day of reckoning – and finally, that day is here in many respects.

McMillan then pointed out that, somewhat surprisingly, everything is NOT gloom and doom – at least not in the agricultural industry.

Due in part to changing weather patterns experienced across the country over the past few years, along with a number of other factors young people in Alabama may very well find that NOW is the perfect time to pursue a career in agriculture.

Also during his visit, Commissioner McMillan recognized three farming families which have made a significant impact upon Cherokee County, with those being the family of “Dub” Ellis, along with those of Tom Brock Jordan and George Harold Jordon.
