4-H Junior Naturalist Program at Cherokee Rock Village

Cherokee County 4-H is partnering with the Cherokee County Park Board to deliver the new Alabama 4-H Junior Naturalist Program. This program is targeted for youth, ages 9-18, but younger children are also welcome to attend with a parent.

Mrs. Mirandi Reese Watson, 4-H Foundation Regional Extension Agent, will be presenting a series of monthly educational programs at Cherokee Rock Village. These programs will be open to the public, as well as park quests.

The first program will take place on Monday, November 21st; from 1-2 pm. Participants will meet at the Cherokee Rock Village pavilion next to the restrooms.

The educational program for November will be the Alabama 4-H Skins ‘N Skulls program. The Skins ‘N Skulls kit has real animal skins from eleven different species of wildlife native to Alabama. It also includes examples of the skulls from each of the species. During this program, youth will learn what it means to be an herbivore, carnivore, or omnivore.  They will also learn about the eye and teeth features that indicate food preference, and how these animals use their fur color for camouflage and warning coloration.

After this fun, hands-on demonstration, the group will go on a short and easy observation hike to try to spot some of these local animals. This is a wonderful Natural Resources program that kids love!

This program is free, but park visitors must pay the $5 per vehicle day use fee at the Cherokee Rock Village cabin upon entering the park. Pre-registration is NOT required.  Any questions can be directed to Mrs. Mirandi Reese Watson, 4-H Foundation Regional Extension Agent, at mrw0028@auburn.edu or 256-927-3250.

Looking ahead, the program for December will be “Alabama Birds” and will take place on Monday, December 19th.
