The 4th Annual Run 4 Val 5K & 1K Health walk proved to be another great success – the event took on Saturday in downtown Centre and is sponsored by the Odyssey Fitness Spa & Health Center and the City of Centre. Race organizer Eva Garner –

Garner said that she wants to this each and every business and individual who sponsored the event including all those that volunteered in any way. Special thank you was also extended to the City of Centre for their participation in the event and for the purchase of event t-shirts.

The Memorial Run/Walk/Jog is held each year in Honor of longtime Centre Police Chief Chief Val Courtney with proceeds going to a Scholarship Fund in his name.

Chief Courtney passed away in 2013 at the age of 62 following a brief illness – in 2014 Kurt Duryea and Eva Garner came up with the idea to host a Health Walk for several reasons and decided to hold the event in Chief Courtney’s Honor.

Chief Courtney was an honorable member of our community, as stated in many of the eulogies. He was known for his compassion, loyalty, protective nature and his ability to see the potential in everyone.

In a twenty year profession that often sees the worst of humanity, Chief Courtney managed to look past the bad to the good in people. This year Centre, Centre Police Chief Kirk Blankenship was the honorary starter for the race.
