JERRY GALLIARD(JEREMIE, Haiti) — The devastating impact of Hurricane Matthew on Haiti’s already fragile infrastructure is apparent in the video above, taken by a helicopter pilot flying over the city of Jeremie.
A city of about 31,000 that serves as the capital of the Grand’Anse Department, Jeremie is largely isolated from the rest of Haiti, located in the country’s western half.
The pilot who took this video, which was provided by the Connecticut-based non-profit organization Haitian Health Foundation, said Jeremie is “wiped out. Barely 1 percent of houses are standing. The people are alive … they survived. But soon, they may starve. They’re cut-off.”
