Several concerned citizens from the Bay Springs Road area were in attendance at Tuesday’s meeting of the Centre City Council to express their displeasure with the city’s recent decision to have the JFK Center surveyed with the intentions of selling the property.

During the previous meeting, Mayor Tony Wilkie said that there had been some interest in persons purchasing the property and that he would like for the city to clarify the property lines of the facility and a motion was passed to have the property surveyed.

During Tuesday’s meeting, Charles Sanders spoke on behalf of those who are against the measure –

Sanders contends that the building doesn’t even belong to the city in the first place and therefore they have no right or reason to be interested in selling it. Following some lengthy discussion, Mayor Pro-Tem Bess Yarbrough who presided over the meeting in the absence of Mayor Wilkie said that the council would be willing to work with the group in any way possible in coming up with a solution suitable for both parties.

In other business, members of the Cherokee County Association of Firefighters were present at the meeting in order to clarify miscommunications involving the new P-25 radio system for the fire department –

During the previous meeting the council had voted unanimously to not pay that connection fee of $2,118.75, it now appears everyone has a better understanding of exactly what that money is going to be used for and no one opposed the motion.

Sgt. Riley Combs with the Centre Police Department received approval to purchase necessary equipment with monies the department has received from a grant of just under $10,000.

The council also made a motion declaring April 18-22 as Clean-Up Week in the City of Centre.
