Andre Ward Defeats Sergey Kovalev by Decision

(Joe Faraoni / ESPN Images)(LAS VEGAS) — The light heavyweight fight between Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev lived up to the hype. The three-belt champion Kovalev knocked Ward down in the second round for the first time in the American’s career, and continued to attack relentlessly.

As the fight wore on, Ward started to land more punches and landed a left that snapped Kovalev’s head back in the seventh round.

In the end, the decision went to the judge’s score cards. Each judge scored the fight 114-113 in favor of Ward, giving him the victory and Kovalev’s belts.

The judges had Ward winning the last six rounds of the fight, while Kovalev said he thought Ward only won three rounds total and was unhappy with the judges’ decision.

Ward remained perfect at 31-0 while Kovalev fell to 30-1-1. Kovalev’s promoter, Kathy Duva, hinted that she would use the rematch clause in the contract for a second fight.
