Burglary Suspect Found with Alleged Pipe Bomb Now Facing Additional Charges

Stevens, Johnny Wade

A Calhoun County burglary suspect who was allegedly found with a pipe bomb inside his truck – is now facing additional charges.  ABC 33/40 is reporting, that 34 year old Johnny Wade Stevens has been charged with being in possession of a destructive device after law enforcement officials found what appeared to be a pipe bomb in his vehicle following his arrest last Friday afternoon.

The home was in the process of being remodeled, and when the homeowner returned from lunch, he saw Stevens’ vehicle in the yard, and witnessed him coming out of the home, with items taken from inside.

Police were called, and quickly caught up with Stevens just a short distance away on Beck Road, where he was placed under arrest, and charged with both burglary and possession of a controlled substance.

At that point, officers noticed what appeared to be a pipe bomb in the back of the suspects’ truck; investigators said the device looked to be made of PVC pipe, capped on both ends, with a fuse on one end.

The device was safely detonated by the bomb squad – and afterwards, officers searched Stevens’ home for additional explosives; they say there were some additional components which had been used in the making of the device found in the truck, but nothing else.

ATF Agents took samples on Friday and federal charges could be filed against Stevens’ at a later date.
