Calhoun County Jail Inmate Dies After Hanging Himself In His Cell

A 49 year old Calhoun County Jail inmate took his own life by hanging himself just after 12:30pm on Saturday –William Jeffery Hopper of Eastaboga hung his bed sheet on a door hinge of the cell door.

According to a News Release from Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson, The inmate was housed the C Block section of the jail. Jail staff and the on duty jail nurse responded when he was discovered by his cell mates. CPR was started by jail officers and the nurse.

William Jeffery HopperAn ambulance responded but they were unsuccessful in their efforts to revive him. A Calhoun County Deputy Coroner declared him dead at the scene.

Investigators from the Center for Applied Forensics Department at Jacksonville State University and Investigators with the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office lead the investigation.

The victim’s body has been sent for an autopsy by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. Hopper was arrested on the January 16, 2015 by members of the U. S. Marshal’s Task Force for parole violation warrants.

He was on parole for previous Robbery 1st Degree and Robbery 3rd Degree charges. He also had current warrants from other agencies for burglary.
