Cam Newton Ruled Out for Week 5 Matchup with Buccaneers

Phil Ellsworth/ESPN(CHARLOTTE, N.C).  — Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will not play in the team’s Monday night game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as he recovers from a concussion.

Newton sustained the concussion in the team’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 4. Falcons linebacker Deion Jones delivered an illegal hit on Newton in the fourth quarter and he was unable to finish the game.

Panthers head coach Ron Rivera told reporters after Saturday’s practice, “We’ve done this before. It’s that next man up mentality. We’ve done it before.”

Newton has missed just two games since joining the league in 2011. He will be replaced by backup quarterback Derek Anderson, who will be making his third career start as a Panther.
