The Cedar Bluff Town Council, on Tuesday, began the initial steps needed to hold a referendum allowing Sunday alcohol sales within the town limits. Several council members indicated that while they may personally be against it, the measure should be left up to a vote by Cedar Bluff residents. After some discussion on the matter, Council Member Dwayne Agan made the motion, unanimously approved, to allow the people of Cedar Bluff to decide for themselves whether to allow the sale of Sunday alcohol sales.
Before that can happen, however, the council will now need to put together a proposal for State Representative Richard Lindsey and State Senator Phil Williams to take to Montgomery in the next legislative session. If the measure passes, the town of Cedar Bluff will join the city of Gadsden, in legalizing Sunday alcohol sales. Just last month, Gadsden voters approved a similar measure.
After receiving a request from the Red Cross for a donation of $1,000, Council Member Burkhalter felt that if the town gives to the Red Cross, they should also give to other such organizations. After some discussion, the council decided to give a donation in the amount of $600, which according to the council is the amount given in previous years.
Pleased with the work of new Town Clerk Susie Surrett and Assistant Town Clerk Sabrina Minton at the end of their 90-day probationary period, the council agreed to designate them permanent employees, complete with a salary of $35,000 per year and $12 per hour, respectively.
Additionally, William Russell Bishop and Blake Kiser were appointed as firefighters for the Cedar Bluff Volunteer Fire Department.
Also approved, was the maintenance plan for the recently purchased fire truck.
Mayor Tammy Crane informed the council that the old fire truck recently sold on GovDeals.com for $40,000 after a previous purchase for $35,000 fell through. With the sale of the old fire truck, brush truck, and garbage truck, the town has raised $56,623 to be put towards paying off the newly purchased fire truck.
The council agreed to surplus several additional items of town property, including computers, lighting, and a small crane.
The council is looking at the possibility of putting the old water treatment plant property, which Council Member Burton cited as a liability, up for sale, voting to have the property surveyed and appraised upon completion of the survey.
Also, the council voted to reestablish municipal court.
Mayor Crane reminded everyone that the 3rd Friday of September is the Official POW/MIA Recognition Day and encouraged everyone to wear red in honor of all former prisoners of war and those who are missing in action.
The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 15th, at 5:30pm.
