Centre Middle School Student Wins County Spelling Bee

An eighth grade student from Centre Middle School was the winner of the recent 2016 Cherokee County Spelling Bee. Cedar Bluff School hosted the event in the school library.

First place winner was Chandler Norton and second place winner was Lily Freeman from Sand Rock School who is also an eighth grade student.

When the competition got down to the final two contestants, Chandler won after correctly spelling “linseed.”

Norton and Freeman advanced to the county wide competition after winning bees at their schools.

Other competing contestants who won at their schools included Mark Sawyer from Cedar Bluff School, Samantha Stubbs from Centre Elementary School, Chandler Norton from Centre Middle School, Charity Green from Gaylesville School, Lily Freeman from Sand Rock School and Jonathan Johnson from Spring Garden School.

Alternate school winners included Braden Sharp from Cedar Bluff School, Emilee Paul from Centre Elementary School, Kendall Southerland from Centre Middle School, Cadence Burkhead from Gaylesville School, Devin Daniell from Sand Rock School and Annabelle Hill from Spring Garden School.

School sponsors included Pam Burgess from Cedar Bluff School, Gina Roe from Gaylesville School, Anna Young from Centre Middle School, Amie Davis from Centre Elementary School, Leslie Ann Rowland from Sand Rock School and Beth Fletcher from Spring Garden School.

Norton now advances to the Alabama State Spelling Bee, scheduled for is March 12 at Alabama First United Methodist Church, 140 Market Center Drive in Alabaster, Ala.
