Chattooga Animal Control Officer Passes Away

Chattooga County has lost a member of its law enforcement community.

Chattooga County Animal Control Officer Aubrey Smith passed away Saturday night at his home.

He was known to most people in Chattooga County as “Smitty.”

Smith was a former Chattooga County Deputy and also worked for the Town of Trion Police Department.

A farmer and law enforcement officer, he ran for sheriff in 2008 but was defeated in the Democratic Primary in a three way race that ended with a runoff between incumbent Sheriff Ralph Kellett and John Everett who went on to win the election in 2008.

In 2009 Chattooga County Commissioner Jason Winters hired Smith as the county’s animal control officer.

Smith had planned to retire next year.
