Chattooga County Deputy Fired Following Accident and DUI Charge

Chattooga County 2A Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office Deputy has been fired after being charged with DUI and being involved in an accident Tuesday night (December 23rd).

Sheriff Mark Schrader announced Wednesday that the deputy, identified as Donald Starkey, was traveling on Highway 157 in Cloudland when he was involved in a single-vehicle crash.

He was charged with failure to maintain single lane; failure to notify owner upon striking a fixed object; and driving under the influence.

Those charges were filed by the Georgia State Patrol.

Schrader said he immediately fired Deputy Starkey whom he referred to as (quote) “a good deputy and shift supervisor” adding “he was dependable and a hard worker; I’m surprised and disappointed by his actions; I am also very grateful no one was injured in the crash and that no other vehicles were involved.” (end-quote)

Sheriff Schrader stated that Starkey was not on duty at the time of the crash and was not in a county vehicle.
