Cherokee County Basketball Tournament at Gadsden State Cherokee

Thumbnail for 175235The Cherokee County Lady Warriors and Spring Garden boys picked up victories Thursday night in the opening round of the 2015 Cherokee County Basketball Tournament held at the Gadsden State Cherokee Arena in Centre.

Cherokee County cruised past Gaylesville 54 to 23 while Spring Garden ousted the Trojans boys’ squad 64 to 18.

The schedule for Friday tips off at 4 p.m. with top seed Spring Garden facing Cherokee in a girls semi-final contest.  Second seed Sand Rock squares off against third seed Cedar Bluff following the conclusion of that game.

Class 4A, No. 1 Cherokee County is scheduled for a 7 p.m. semi-final varsity boys tip off against Spring Garden.    The evening concludes with Sand Rock and the Class 1A, No. 5 Cedar Bluff Tigers.

Both boys games will be carried live on WEIS 990 AM and 100.5 FM and streamed live from www.weisradio.com

The WEIS radio sports broadcast team of Shane McElwee and Kurt Duryea will participate in a charity free throw shoot out against Sand Rock girls head coach Lisa Bates and Spring Garden principal Mike Welsh.  Bates is Jacksonville State Hall of Famer while Welsh starred at Cherokee County High School and Berry College. McElwee was a two –time first team all-state honoree at Spring Garden.  Their charity shoot out takes place at halftime of the Cedar Bluff vs. Sand Rock boys’ varsity contest and benefits the Cherokee County Sports Hall of Fame.
