Cherokee County Board of Education Meeting Tonight / Tuesday, April 15th

Board of Education

Approval of a Sales Tax Request is one of the items on the agenda for the Tuesday night meeting of the Cherokee County Board of Education.

As reported over the last several days the One Cent Sales Tax – or School Tax – failed to make it out of the Senate – and as a consequence of that – failed to make it onto the June Primary Ballot.

The One Cent Sales Tax had actually been sent to Montgomery as a “division” tax – with around $400,000 coming off the top to pay for school resource officers, and the remaining amount being split 60/40 between the school system and the general fund – with the general fund portion being earmarked for the county jail.

Senator Phil Williams spoke on that issue during a recent Tea Party meeting in Leesburg:

That tax generated approximately one-and-a-half million dollars a year for the school system.

Cherokee County Commission Chairman Kirk Day was also at that meeting and had this to say:

During the planning session taking place prior to the Monday morning meeting of the Cherokee County Commission – Chairman Day stated that Superintendent Mitchell Guice has requested to be on the agenda for the last meeting of the month – which is scheduled for Monday, April 28th, at 5:00pm.

Tonight’s meeting of the Board of Education takes place in the Central Office on Main Street in Centre, starting at 6:00pm – that meeting is open to the public.
