Cherokee County Park Board Meeting

During Wednesday’s meeting of the Cherokee County Park Board, full time positions were approved and pay raises given to Park Employees. Cherokee Rock Village Park Manager, Shannon Mackey was given a 25% pay increase to put him to $15 per hour while Park employee, Cody Rinehart was given a 10% increase which put his pay to $10.60 per hour. Both have been part-time employees until Wednesday when the Board approved them to be full time 40 hour per week employees. The total expense for the wage increase is $8,956.48.

The Board had done a feasibility study to see if they could host the 4th of July Fireworks for the County in 2018. However, the information gathered from pyrotechnical companies indicated the Park Board does not have a suitable place for the project. No further consideration will be given to the project.

The Park Board discussed the upcoming Chamber Breakfast to be at Cherokee Rock Village Park on October 12th and hosted by the Park Board.

The Southeastern Climbers Coalition made a presentation to the Board about necessary work that needs to be done at Cherokee Rock Village Park to repair damaged areas on trails due to erosion and prevent future damage. The work is to be done over a 20 week period at a projected cost of $41,000 with $20,000 to be paid by the Park Board and the remaining $21,000 to be funded by grants. The Board took the matter under advisement and will make a decision on the project in October.

The Rose Garden Club visited with the Board about the work the Club is doing at Ethel Morrison Park. The Club is doing some cleanup work at the Park and wanted to inform the Board of the issue with dead and damaged trees in the Park.

During the Manager’s report to the Board, Shannon Mackey said many dead trees have been cut. There is a need for Park Volunteers with chainsaws to cutup the downed trees so they can be removed from the area.

The next regular meeting of the Park Board will be October 11th at the Park Board Office at 101 West Main Street in Centre at 1PM and is open to the public.
