Cherokee County Residents Report Return of Computer Scam

Scam Alert 16The Centre Police Department has received reports of another scam making an unwelcome return to the area.

A resident contacted the police department on Monday, reporting that a man called her and told her in a rather stern voice that he was calling to help her fix her computer.

She admitted that her computer was not working quite as well as it should (but really when are they ever?!), however, when the man asked her to log onto her computer, and follow his instructions she was hesitant, and then informed him that she didn’t feel comfortable doing so until she discussed it with her daughter.

Fortunately, the woman didn’t fall victim to the scam.

This particular con is nothing new, as we’ve had numerous reports of this same scam being attempted both here and in other areas.

Once someone has access to your computer they can hijack sensitive information, including banking info, credit or debit card numbers, social security number and so on; all of which is what they need to run up bills in your name and empty out your bank account.

Under such circumstances there’s nothing wrong with being rude. Simply hang up.

And don’t worry about hurting anyone’s feelings. These crooks are used to it.  And it’s what they deserve.
