Cherokee County “School Tax” Vote to Appear on July Run-Off Ballot

Cherokee County Commission

It appears the extension of the Cherokee County one-cent sales tax – known as the “school tax” – will be on the ballot during the July run-off election.

During the Tuesday meeting of the Cherokee County Commission the measure passed by a vote of three-to-one with the lone dissenting vote coming from Commissioner Marcie Foster, who in a prepared statement outlined, the reasons behind her decision:

Foster went on to explain that she felt information had not been forthcoming regarding the need for continuation of the sales tax considering the results of the two most recent audits:

Commissioners Kimball Parker and Carlton Teague spoke afterwards – explaining their reasons for voting “yes” to putting the vote on the ballot:

Following the meeting Commissioner Foster told WEIS Radio News that she had no problem with the issue being up for a vote, however, if she simply voted “yes” during Tuesday’s meeting it would appear she was in favor of the tax continuing when she is not:

If approved by the voters of Cherokee County, that one-cent sales tax would be extended for a period of two years.

The run-off election will take place July 15th.

The next regular meeting of the Cherokee County Commission is slated for Monday, June 9th at 10:00am in the County Administration Building in Centre.
