Cherokee County Skills USA Students Bring Home The Gold

It was a busy agenda for the Cherokee County Board of Education on Thursday – the board opened the meeting with Superintendent of Education Mitchell Guice and Tech School Principal Brett Keasler recognizing those students who recently participated in the State Skills USA Contest with a number of students bringing home gold and silver medals in their respective categories.

Those students recognized included:

Precision Machine And Manufacturing – Jeff Gaither, GSCC Instructor
Automated Manufacturing Technology Gold Medal Winners| Jonathan Heard, McKayla Chandler, James Ring – This team will Advance to the National Skills USA Championship in Louisville, KY

Board members also heard from Marcia Sewell, Curriculum, Textbooks and Assessment Coordinator who presented an update on procedures regarding Dual Enrollment, Virtual School and Textbooks.

Immediately following Mrs. Sewell’s presentation, the board then approved motions to adopt the Science Textbooks from the States adopted list as well as an agreement for an IXL Math and Language Arts site license.

Out of State travel was approved for Merri Blankenship and FCCLA Students to attend the FCCLA National Leadership Conference in San Diego, California July 3rd – July 8th and Sandi Wheeling, Lisa Hendon and the Gaylesville Varsity and Junior Varsity Cheerleaders to attend the UCA Cheer Camp in Panama City Beach July 24th – July 28th at no expense to the board.

The board also approved a number of personnel items however, a copy of that personnel action sheet was not immediately made available as it usually is, also approved was Professional Development travel items and a list of job postings.

The board then went into a lengthy Executive Session for the purpose of holding a student disciplinary hearing.
