Cherokee County Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony June 11th

“The Cherokee County Sports Hall of Fame”, was the sponsor of the most recent Chamber of Commerce Breakfast on the campus of Gadsden State Cherokee in Centre.

Hall of Fame President Mike Welsh headed up that morning’s program sharing memories of the pride he has seen in our community, due to incredible accomplishments by the county’s many outstanding athletes over the years.

He also reminded those in attendance that the biggest event of the year for the organization is just around the corner:

 

Those being inducted at the ceremony will include: Paige Anderson McDonald, Taylor Burt, Jamie Hampton, Lucas McMichen, Josh Moten, Bobby Sanders and Charley Whorton.

McDonald was All-State and All-American leading Spring Garden to the State Championship as the finale to an undefeated season at 36 and 0.

Burt was All-State and led Sand Rock to the State Championship Game; later playing college softball.

Hampton was an All-State Quarterback at Cedar Bluff School – leading his team to the State Championship game his senior year.  He later played Quarterback at Troy University.

McMichen was All-State at Sand Rock, leading the team to the ’97 State Championship game and he later played college ball at West Georgia.

Moton was All-State at Cedar Bluff, setting the Alabama state record for career receptions; he later played wide receiver at Jacksonville State.

Sanders was an all-round top notch athlete at Hatcher High School; he later went on to play minor league baseball.

Whorton was All-State in Basketball at Centre, ranking as their top scorer.
