Cherokee County Unemployment Rate One of the Lowest in the State

According to the latest unemployment figures released by the Alabama Department of Labor – Cherokee County had one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state for the month of March, coming in at 5.9%.

Statewide the rate rose slightly, from 6.4% in February to 6.7% in March; a year ago the rate was 6.6%.

The latest numbers represent a total of 144,628 people out of work – which is an increase of over 7,000 from the previous month.

For the first time in months the construction industry showed a gain.

The most in-demand jobs across the state remain those of truck drivers, supervisors of retail sales workers and registered nurses.

The highest unemployment rates for the month of March were posted in Wilcox County and Perry County – coming in at 16.4% and 13.2% respectively. Meanwhile, the lowest rates were in Shelby County at 4.8%, Lee County at 5.7% and here in Cherokee County at the aforementioned 5.9%.
