City Of Centre Considering Pulling Away From Cherokee County’s Public Communications System

It’s been a topic that has been brought up several times over the last few months and now it appears the City of Centre is in the planning stages of pulling away from the Cherokee County Public Safety Communications System currently in place in Cherokee County and constructing their own standalone system to handle the city’s dispatching within the city limits.

On Friday members of Centre’s newly appointed Communications Committee met with representatives with Sharp Communications out of Huntsville in addition to Motorola Reps. to discuss the city’s options.

Centre Mayor Tony Wilkie says that the current P-25 system is just not feasible cost wise for the City of Centre and that something has to be done.

We have reached out to the Cherokee County Communications District (E-911) for a response and also members of the Cherokee County Association of Volunteer Fire Departments Radio Communications Committee who manages and maintains the state of the art county wide Public Safety Communication System.

Another meeting with officials from Motorola and Sharpe Communications has been set for Monday, February 13th at 2:00 p.m. at Centre City Hall with members of the Centre City Council to further discuss the matter.
