drowning83The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office is investigating the fifth drowning case of the summer on Weiss Lake.

Cherokee County Coroner Dr. Jeremy Deaton told WEIS Radio News that the latest incident occurred on Saturday evening at a residence on East Chattooga Drive in Cedar Bluff.

WEIS Radio News has learned that Cedar Bluff Police Officers Chris Vaughn, Chris O’Neal and Seth Hood along with Lane Wilson and David Storey of the Cherokee County Rescue Squad and Cherokee EMS Paramedics Bobby Joe Smith and Seth Graham pulled the victim, identified as 69 year old William John Weaver of Cedar Bluff from the water.

Cedar Bluff Fire Chief Matthew Sprayberry, who is also a member of the Cherokee County Rescue Squad, along with others began CPR on Weaver until medics arrived on the scene.

Weaver was then transported by ambulance to Floyd Medical Center in Rome where he died of his injuries at around 2:00 Monday morning.

Dr. Deaton said that at this time no foul play is suspected and that the incident appears to be nothing more than another tragic accident.

The Coroner’s Office is conducting a full investigation into the incident.
