Crossville Man Arrested After Burglarizing And Attempting To Run Over The Homeowner

A Crossville man was arrested Friday after attempting to burglarize a home and strike the homeowner with his vehicle.

According to Collinsville Police Chief Gary Bowen, the police department received a 911-call on Wednesday, Jan. 25 from a Hispanic male who lives in the city limits. The man told officers that as he pulled into his driveway, he could see a man standing inside his residence looking out at him through the front window of his home.

The homeowner said he could see the suspect as he ran out the back door, and he got into a dark-colored vehicle. The homeowner said as the suspect was leaving the residence, he attempted to run over the man with his car. The homeowner narrowly avoided being struck with the car, and as the suspect pulled out into the road, he yelled to the homeowner that he owned the residence.

Collinsville Deputy Chief Rex Leath and Officer Ada Hamilton arrived at the address and got a description of the suspect and his vehicle. Officers were also able to determine that the suspect had taken cash and jewelry from the residence. After an investigation by Leath and Hamilton, they were able to get the name of the suspect.

The homeowner was shown a photo lineup that contained the suspect, and the homeowner was able to pick out the perpetrator. Officers arrested Barry Dewayne Hughes, 37, Crossville, Friday after obtaining warrants for third-degree burglary, reckless endangerment and theft of property second degree.

Through the investigation process, it was determined that Hughes had done this in the past, and a majority of his victims are Hispanic. Hughes was arrested on Feb. 3 and booked into the DeKalb County Detention Center. He is being held on bonds totaling $23,000.
