Cubs demoting slugger Kyle Schwarber

Photo by Allen Kee / ESPN Images(CHICAGO) — Just seven months after winning their first World Series in more than 100 years, the Chicago Cubs are in the midst of a rough patch, and on Thursday, they announced the demotion of one of their big sluggers.

Outfielder Kyle Schwarber is being sent to Triple-A Iowa, the team said, ahead of an 11-game road trip. Schwarber is hitting just .171 this season — that after putting together a strong .412 batting average in last year’s World Series.

Schwarber played in the Fall Classic last year without having registered a single hit in the regular season, having torn his ACL in the year’s third game.

The fourth pick in the 2014 draft, Schwarber burst onto the scene in 2015 with 16 home runs in 69 games. While his power has remained this year — slugging 12 homers in 64 games — the rest of his game has seen a dramatic slip.
