DANGEROUS TRAFFIC SITUATION AT LEESBURG ON HIGHWAY 68

Alabama Highway 68 at Leesburg, west bound lane going up the mountain toward Sand Rock IS CLOSED!!!

Many motorists are driving around the barricades and traveling up the mountain, going the wrong way in a one way lane with traffic coming down the mountain. West bound traffic should detour at the bottom of the mountain at Leesburg onto Alabama Highway 273 to Blue Pond and turn left onto County Road 48 which will take them into Sand Rock. All 18-wheel vehicles and other commercial carriers are to detour onto U.S. 411 south to Gadsden then onto I-59 north to the Collinsville exit.

Please Tell All Your Family And Friends To Take The Detour so No One Will Be Injured Or Killed.

The detour is necessary due to a portion of the roadside caving off after the heavy rains more than a week ago.

The Alabama Highway Department tells WEIS Radio News they do not know when the necessary repairs can be made so the west bound lane can be re-opened.

For Now, Please Do Not Drive Around the Barricades. Be Safe and take the detour.
