DeKalb County Man Charged with Attempted Murder

A DeKalb County man faces multiple charges including Attempted Murder after officials say he swung a hammer at – and fired a gun toward – a neighbor with whom he was apparently involved in a property line dispute.

According to the DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden, the incident happened Sunday in the High Point community of Sand Mountain, as 30 year old Michael Hardeman of Valley Head, swung a hammer at his neighbor, barely missing him.  Hardeman then pointed a firearm at his neighbor and pulled the trigger, but the weapon failed to discharge.  According to the Sheriff’s Office, after the firearm failed to discharge – Hardeman allegedly loaded another round of ammunition, and fired a shot in his neighbor’s direction.

Sheriff Welden said “Acts of violence such as this will not be tolerated. It’s a blessing that no one was seriously injured, but that was certainly the intent of the suspect,”

Hardeman was arrested and charged with Obstructing Governmental Operations.  He was held in the DeKalb County Detention Center until an Attempted Murder charge was filed on Monday.
