UPDATE/Director of Cherokee County STAR Program Jailed on Sexual Abuse Charge

The director of the Cherokee County STAR Program was arrested Thursday on charges Sexual Abuse 2nd Degree.
According to the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office website, Phillip Wayne Gramling, age 48, was booked in shortly before 11:00 (May 22nd). According to Rainbow City Police, Gramling posted bond on Friday morning.

Rainbow City Police say the alleged victim was not associated with the STAR Program. Anyone with any information about this case may call the Rainbow City Police Department or Etowah County DA’s Office.

The STAR Program – which stands for Saving Teens at Risk – is operated through an independent board with the juvenile court system referring individuals. Since its beginning, the STAR Program has received more than $5 million in Grant Funding.

The program is centered on helping troubled youth between the ages of 12 and 17 to either make the transition back into school or obtain their GED.

Gramling was the founder of the program and acted as director and counselor.
