Eight Survivors Found in Rubble of Italy Hotel Buried by Avalanche: Reports

Hemera/Thinkstock(FARINDOLA, Italy) — Eight people have been found alive in the rubble of an Italy hotel that collapsed after being buried by an avalanche on Wednesday, according to local media reports.

Hotel Rigopiano on the Gran Sasso mountain was buried under snow following Wednesday’s multiple earthquakes in the region.

The eight who are were found alive under the rubble are three men, three women and two children, according to the reports. It’s unclear how many have already been extracted from the rubble, though a woman and a child extracted alive are already on their way to the hospital via helicopter, local news agency ANSA reported.

It is thought that these people have been under the rubble since about 5 or 6 p.m. local time Wednesday.

Four people have been found dead at the hotel site so far. According to unconfirmed reports, up to 37 people may have been at the hotel when it was submerged under the snow and rubble.

Two other people were rescued on Thursday, but the heavy snow made initial rescue operations difficult. Weather conditions have since improved.
