Etowah County Fugitive Arrested in Cherokee County / UPDATED

An Etowah County fugitive was arrested in Cherokee County last week (Thursday, May 1st) and charged with Trafficking Amphetamines.

According to information contained in a news release from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office – investigators with the Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office, apprehended 47 year old George Franklin O’Leary with a large amount of methamphetamine and other drugs; he also had a large amount of cash – and other items normally used in the selling of illegal drugs – in his possession at the time of his arrest.

Earlier that week, Etowah County authorities had notified the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office that O’Leary may be in the county (Cherokee), and Investigator Matt Sims later spotted O’Leary at a Centre-area restaurant, followed him and attempted to detain him.

O’Leary fled through Centre before finally being brought to a stop on Bay Springs Road by Sims and Centre Police Department Officers.

A subsequent search of O’Leary’s camper revealed the large amount of illegal drugs and various other paraphernalia – at which point he was taken to the Cherokee County Detention Center and charged with Trafficking Amphetamines, Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance and the Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 1st Degree and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia in addition to Attempting to Elude.

O’Leary is expected to be extradited to Etowah County to face additional charges.
