Five-Vehicle Accident in Ft Payne Sends Three to the Hospital

Several people were hurt in a five-vehicle accident in DeKalb County on Monday morning – in a prime example of the domino effect.

According to Ft Payne Police Chief Randy Bynum, the accident occurred at 10:10am in the 2000 block of Gault Avenue North – when 49 year old Leland Russell Bearden of Ft Payne – driving a 2002 Chevy pickup, collided with a 1997 Suburu Outlander, being driven by 61 year old Jimmie Lee Weathers of Cloudland, Georgia.

The Outlander then struck a 1998 Dodge Intrepid, driven by 25 year old Vanessa Leann Bowman of Flat Rock; her vehicle in turn struck a 2005 Chevy Equinox being driven by 18 year old Leslie Francisco Andres of Ft Payne.  The Andres vehicle then hit a 2001 Ford Crown Vic being driven by 70 year old James Larry Chesser – who is the mayor of Ft Payne.

Bearden, Bowman and a passenger in the Bowman vehicle, Darlene Clark Largent of a Flat Rock address – were all transported to DeKalb Regional by DeKalb Ambulance Service for treatment.

The wreck remains under investigation by the Ft Payne Police Department.
