Former Cherokee County Residents Involved in Rome Shooting Incident

Rome - Bevels Stand-Off

A Rome resident reportedly took his own life Wednesday afternoon, as police attempted to serve him with an aggravated assault warrant. Terry Lynn Bevels had apparently tried to shoot his wife in the head only hours earlier – fortunately, the shot missed and she escaped injury.

Both Bevels and his wife are originally from Cherokee County.

A single gunshot inside the home heard by three officers at around 3:45pm prompted a call to the Floyd County SWAT Team, who quickly responded to the location on Highway 140.

At approximately 5:45pm SWAT unleashed a flash/bang of pepper spray through a front window and entered the home, only to find Bevels dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to head.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:44 by Floyd County Deputy Coroner Ernie Studdard.

Floyd County Police Captain George Lemming told media outlets, that a bullet hole was found in the home by police, reinforcing the suspicion that Bevels had fired at his wife earlier in the day.

The incident remains under investigation by Rome City Police.
