Freedom From Religion Foundation Challenges Rainbow City Nativity Scene

The Gadsden Times is reporting that the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation has objected to a nativity scene in front of City Hall in Rainbow City.

A concerned local resident objected to the scene, which employs white lights and stands along with a Christmas tree. City officials have not commented on the scene.

rainbowcitynativity“Displaying an inherently Christian message on government property unmistakably sends the message that Rainbow City endorses the religious beliefs embodied in the display,” the letter states.

Earlier this month, the Foundation also challenged a nativity scene in Jay, Fla. The city eventually sold the scene, which had been on display for 40 years every Christmas. It was erected elsewhere.

The Foundation has recently challenged the City of Piedmont’s Christmas Parade theme, which was originally “Keep Christ in Christmas” until the city removed the theme at the Foundation’s challenge. That didn’t stop residents from showing up at the parade with T-shirts and signs with the original theme.

That came a month after a similar dispute was reported involving the group over prayers offered at Piedmont home football games.
