Girl (Super) Power: Female Directors Will Call the Shots on "Jessica Jones"

Myles Aronowitz/Netflix(LOS ANGELES) — In an attempt to buck the unfortunate reality that women are the minority when it comes to calling the shots on sets, Melissa Rosenberg, the executive producer of Marvel’s Jessica Jones, has announced that all 13 episodes of the acclaimed Netflix series will be helmed by a woman.

Variety points out that only one other show, Queen Sugar, which airs on OWN, can make such a claim: Ava DuVernay’s show had only female directors during its debut season.

Rosenberg made the announcement during her panel at “Transforming Hollywood 7: Diversifying Entertainment,” which was held Friday at USC’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

The showrunner tells the trade that Marvel was “completely” on board with the decision.

The sophomore series of Jessica Jones, which centers on Krysten Ritter’s super-powered, super-flawed retired superhero-turned investigator, will start shooting next year.

The character will also appear in the Netflix hero team-up series The Defenders

Marvel is owned by Disney, the parent company of ABC News.
