Hokes Bluff Middle School Set to Re-open

Hokes Bluff Middle School 1

Hokes Bluff Middle School will re-open later this week – that, after tests attempting to determine the cause of a rash of respiratory illnesses occurring at the facility on December 12th – all proved inconclusive.

Superintendent Alan Cosby says it appears that nothing was found which would make the school unsuitable for occupancy.

As many as 27 students and one teacher were affected by a variety of symptoms, ranging from an outbreak of skin rashes and tremors to breathing problems.

The school and the gymnasium were inspected by Alagasco, the Gadsden HazMat Unit, Etowah County Board of Education Maintenance Department, Modern Heating & Cooling and Alabama Department of Public Health – with nothing out of the ordinary being found.

Cosby stated that those buildings were closed as a precautionary measure by the school system – even though no government agency, company or consultant advised them to do so saying (quote) “The Etowah County Board of Education has taken it upon itself to place the welfare of students and personnel at the highest level of concern and importance,” (end-quote).

Teachers will report back for in-service this Friday (January 3rd) – and students are scheduled to return to class next Monday (January 6th).
