Indictment Handed Down in 18 Year Old Murder Case

Whitton 1WAFF TV48 is reporting that a grand jury has handed down an indictment against a man in connection with a murder case dating back some 18 years.

Whitton 2Barry Van Whitton stands accused of killing his first wife, who disappeared in 1997.

Michelle Whitton was later found beaten and stabbed to death, buried in a shallow grave in DeKalb County.

Whitton told police she had gone out for breakfast and never returned.

Whitton 3Ten years later, in 2007, Whitton’s second wife, Kimberly, and her daughter, Haleigh – both disappeared. They have never been found and that case remains unsolved.

However, during that investigation, police arrested Whitton on weapons charges, and he is currently serving a ten year sentence in the Jackson County Jail.

According to the WAFF report investigators have a jail cell recording during which Whitton bragged about murdering three people however he has never actually confessed to killing anyone.
