Investigation Continues Into Death of Anniston City Jail Prisoner

An investigation into the death of an Anniston City Jail prisoner last month (February) continues

52 year old Jeffrey Russell of Alexandria was pronounced dead in his cell February 21st.

Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown said at that time, the cause of death was suicide, and no foul play was suspected.

According to the Anniston Star, Anniston Police Chief Shane Denham said on March 3rd that his department had finished an internal investigation into the death; however Anniston City Manager Brian Johnson says the city has yet to conclude its own inquiry.

Denham had declined to comment on the findings of his department’s investigation citing respect for Russell’s family.  Anniston Mayor Vaughn Stewart and City Manager Johnson both said that once the city has finished its investigation they will comment on the incident.
