J.K. Rowling's Crime Novel Series Coming to HBO

Rob Stothard/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — With the latest Harry Potter-based adventure, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, about to hit theaters, comes news another tale from author JK Rowling will be jumping from page to screen.

HBO will air a limited series based on Rowling’s best-selling Cormoran Strike crime novels, which she writes under the pen name Robert Galbraith.
According to Deadline, the series, titled Cormoran Strike, will consist of three separate miniseries, each based on one of the books. The Cuckoo’s Calling will run for three hours; The Silkworm for two, and Career of Evil for two.
British actor Tom Burke will star as the titular character, Comoran Strike, a wounded war veteran and illegitimate son of a rock star, who works as a perpetually broke private detective in London.

Rowling first wrote secretly under the Gilbraith nom-de-plume back in 2013 — the name, she later explained was a combination of her political hero Robert F. Kennedy and “Ella Galbraith,” her childhood fantasy name. She noted she wanted to explore a different genre without the pressure of the success of the Harry Potter franchise that comes tied to her name.
However, “Gilbraith’s” debut, Cuckoo’s Calling was so well received that many doubted an unknown author could have penned it, and soon it was revealed Gilbraith was Rowling.
The already well-received Cuckoo skyrocketed in sales when Rowling fans got wind of her secret.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which also stars Colin Farrell and Ezra Miller, opens November 18.
