Jacksonville State’s Griffin Thomas Named “Sports Network Special Teams Player of the Week”

Jacksonville State’s Griffin Thomas was named “the Sports Network National Special Teams Player of the Week” and “College Football Performance National Kicker of the Week”, Monday.

The senior place-kicker set three school records and hit the game-winning field goal in JSU’s 24-21 double-overtime win against North Alabama on Saturday.

The native of Snellville Georgia became just the third player in school history to kick a field goal longer than 50 yards after hitting a career-long 50-yarder in the first quarter. He also was good from 42 and 44 yards, before kicking a 26-yard field goal in the first overtime, and then the game winner with a 20-yarder in the second overtime.

Thomas finished the by making five field goals on six attempts, both school records, and his 16 points tied the school record for most points by kicking. It was the fourth game-winning kick for Thomas over the last two years, and the third game-winning kick on JSU’s final play.

Jacksonville State returns to action this weekend against Sun Belt Conference opponent Georgia State. Kickoff is set for 1:00pm CT from the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
