Getty/Corbis Historical(LOS ANGELES) — Vivian Kubrick, the filmmaker daughter of legendary director Stanley Kubrick, is taking Dr. Phil McGraw to task for what she sees as a “shameful” interview with Shelly Duvall, who is Kubrick says is suffering from physical and mental illness.
Vivian Kubrick is calling for a boycott of a segment, which airs on McGraw’s self-titled show Thursday which features an interview with Duvall.
A tease for the interview shows Duvall speaking about her beliefs that her Popeye co-star Robin Williams is alive, but has shifted shape, and that she believes she’s being tracked by a disc that has been implanted in her scarred legs. “I’m very sick. I need help,” says the former actress, who Mr. Kubrick directed opposite Jack Nicholson in The Shining.
“Unquestionably, this is purely a form of lurid and exploitative entertainment,” Ms. Kubrick says, calling the interview, “appallingly cruel.”
“Shelly Duvall was a movie star … whatever dignity a mere unfortunate creature might have in this world, is denied her by you displaying her in this way,” she adds, signing the social media post, “Sincerely disgusted, Vivian Kubrick.”
