Kyle Larson records second victory of the season with win at Michigan

iStock/Thinkstock(BROOKLYN, Mich.) — Kyle Larson held off a spate of competitors after a string of late cautions at the FireKeepers Casion 400 at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday to record his second win of the season. With the victory, Larson leapfrogs Martin Truex Jr. as the season’s current points leader.

Larson, who started on the pole, led the race for 96 laps — a race high — and got a jump on Chase Elliott on the final restart with just five laps to go to hold on for the win.

Elliot finished second. Joey Logano finished third, with Denny Hamlin and Jamie McMurray following in fourth and fifth.

Truex Jr., the points leader going into the race, finished sixth after winning both the first and second stages of the race.

Up next week is the Monster Energy Cup Series at Sonoma Raceway for the Toyota/Save Mart 350.

Here are the standings after Sunday’s race:

1) Kyle Larson — 640 points
2) Martin Truex Jr. — 635
3) Kyle Busch — 510
4) Kevin Harvick — 508
5) Chase Elliott — 478
6) Brad Keselowski — 476
7) Jamie McMurray — 450
8) Jimmie Johnson — 449
9) Denny Hamlin — 430
10) Joey Logano — 398
