Major Automakers Reporting Sales Declines, But Demand Remains Strong

iStock/Thinkstock(DETROIT) — It wasn’t unexpected, but Detroit’s “Big Three” automakers all reported sales declines in September.

Automakers had seen record sales of 17.5 million vehicles in 2015, and few analysts expected Detroit to maintain that pace. Then numbers leveled off in the last month, with General Motors, Ford and Fiat-Chrysler all reporting declines.

Still industry watchers say demand remains relatively strong, and if you’re in the market for a car, there could be good news.

Analysts say that buyer incentives on new cars, trucks and SUVs are hovering at around $3,900 per vehicle. That beats the previous high recorded at the holiday season in 2008. And the higher the window sticker, the deeper the discount: BMW is offering discounts of around $6,700 per car.
