Man Apparently Sets Fire to His Own Home, Believing “Demons” are Inside

Firefighters and law enforcement officials just across the state line in Chattooga County, GA experienced a rather bizarre situation Thursday evening. Firefighters were dispatched to a report of a mobile home fire in the Sling Alley/Wiggins Road area – however as they arrived on the scene, the homeowner refused to allow them to come down the driveway.

Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader said when law enforcement arrived, the individual refused to allow them access to the burning home as well.

At that point the man, who was identified as Connelly Martin, was taken into custody after a brief foot chase.

Martin told investigators he believed there were demons in the home – and Sheriff Schrader says it appears he set fire to his own residence.

The sheriff said this wasn’t their first encounter with Martin, adding that a small amount of marijuana was found at the scene and there were firearm’s in his possession as well.

Afterwards Martin was taken to a “safe” location otherwise known as the Chattooga County Jail, and is likely facing several charges in connection with the incident.
