Man Dies Following Arrest by Rome Police Over the Weekend

Death Investigation 5

A man became ill and died shortly after his arrest by Rome Police Saturday afternoon, and the initial investigation shows it is possibly drug related.

According to Capt. Mark Tison, officers received a lookout regarding a vehicle with a person inside who had a warrant on them; the officers conducted a traffic stop and arrested a male identified as 33-year-old Kenneth Eugene Russell Carter, along with an unidentified female.

Both were reportedly taken into custody without incident.

When police arrived at the Floyd County Jail, Carter became ill, and he was transported to the hospital where he died. Deputy Coroner Gene Proctor said the death is currently under investigation and preliminary indications are that Carter’s death was drug related.

His body has been sent to the state crime lab for an autopsy.

As with all in custody deaths, the GBI has been called in to investigate.

Tison said there will also be an internal investigation.
