Man Finds World War I Grenade in His Garden

A Calhoun County man made an unsettling discovery this week – he found a hand grenade in his garden.

Bomb 3ABC 3340 reports that Saks resident Harlan Dougherty found the device next to one of his cornstalks. He contacted the Anniston Police Department, who in turn contacted the Department of Public Safety. Two State Troopers were dispatched to recover the grenade.

Dougherty said the troopers told him the device was probably manufactured sometime between 1916 and 1918 – and the grenade itself was almost destroyed from the years of being buried.

Dougherty told ABC 3340 he hopes he never sees another grenade.
