Mr. Arlie Smith

Arlie Smith, 94, of Centre, Alabama, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014.

Mr. Smith was born in DeKalb County on April 21, 1919.  He served in the United States Army during World War II.  He graduated from Auburn University in 1949 with a degree in Agriculture.

Mr. Smith worked as a Soil Conservationist for 26 years and retired in 1975.  He will long be remembered for his work on the Terrapin Creek Watershed and with the farmers of Cherokee County.

Arlie was a faithful church member and lifetime deacon at First Baptist Church of Centre. He also held the honor of being the oldest active member of that congregation.   He traveled across the country working for many years with Carpenters for Christ. 

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.  He also was preceded by his great-grandson, Corey Wilson.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years , Margaret Swilling Smith, Centre, Al;  daughter, Lynda Wilson (Bobby),Montgomery, AL.,  son Lynn R. Smith (Karen), Birmingham, Al.; his sister, Vergie Smith (D.C.), Alberville, Al., grandchildren Wade Wilson (Karla), Wes Wilson (Merrick), Lauren (Brent) and Sarah  and four great-grandchildren. 

The family would like to thank all of their many friends for their prayers and support during this time.

Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 2nd, at Centre First Baptist Church.  The Rev. Eddie Nation will officiate at the service, Perry Funeral Home directing.  Pall bearers will be grandsons and nephews; honorary pall bearers will be the members of  the John Ward Sunday School class and deacons of First Baptist Church.  Mr. Smith will be laid to rest at Cherokee Memory Gardens, Centre, Al. 

The family will receive friends Sunday, March 2nd, at Centre First Baptist Church from 1:00 – 2:30.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to First Baptist Church of Centre.
