Murder Conviction of Etowah County Man Upheld

Roy Thomas SmithAccording to a report from WBRC TV in Birmingham – an Etowah County man convicted of killing his wife in 2010 – has failed in an attempt to have his murder conviction overturned.

Prosecutors say Roy Thomas Smith, who was convicted this past April, strangled his wife in an attempt to keep from losing money and property in an impending divorce.

Smith reportedly stuffed the lifeless body of Carla Smith into the trunk of her vehicle, which was then abandoned in a vacant lot in Gadsden. After she had failed to show up for work as a nursing supervisor at Gadsden Regional Medical Center, her co-workers became worried and made a report which started an investigation into her whereabouts.

Following his conviction, Smith was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.
