Mysterious “Boom” In Chattooga County The Result Of Tannerite?

A mysterious explosion that was heard through much of Chattooga County last week is still without explanation.

On Monday, July 8th, residents in the Pennville community heard a loud boom and didn’t know what to think.

There were several calls made to 911 about the exploding sound, but no one knows “officially” what the reason for the explosion was.

Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader said that while officials aren’t certain what caused the loud noise, the sound could have come from someone shooting Tannerite – a binary exploding target – or a substance like it.

Tannerite is the brand name of one of the most popular of the “exploding targets” that has become popular with some shooters.

Sheriff Schrader told AM 1180 in Summervlle earlier this year that he has had calls about several instances of residents shooting the exploding targets which causes a loud “boom” when it is shot.

The sheriff said there isn’t much that can be done if someone is shooting the substance on private property because it is legal.

The Tannerite brand says on their company web-site that the substance is “specifically designed to be safe.” They also claim that the substance will not start fires.
